Your Floor Molding Guide + Introducing Multifunctional Molding

Using proper molding for your project ensures that the flooring will flow naturally throughout the entire space. In this article, we'll go over different types of molding, and introduce one of our handiest accessories yet: multifunctional molding.

What Does Floor Molding Do?

It's not uncommon for homes, apartment buildings, offices, and other projects to have sections with different surface types. Molding helps the flooring appear seamless around walls, doors, corners, and transition nicely into other rooms.

While you can purchase generic floor molding online, we strongly recommend choosing molding that is from the same flooring series you're using in your project. This will ensure that your flooring looks consistent and aesthetically pleasing.

Floor molding can be divided into different types. Each serves a distinct purpose.

Quarter Round

Quarter round molding helps cover any gaps between the flooring and the baseboards.

T-Molding

T-Molding connects two vinyl flooring surfaces of the same height.

Reducer

A reducer helps transition floors that are at different levels, or heights.

End Cap

End caps are used in special instances, like for transitioning vinyl flooring to carpet, or against sliding doors and fireplaces. Pelican floor molding does a superior job at providing this transition. While some molding is difficult to place near tack strips used for carpeting, our molding fits in snugly, without buckling against different flooring types.

When installing flooring next to a sliding door, we recommend using a smaller piece of flooring as a "shim" to help support the gap between the flooring and the door.

Stair Nose

Stair nose molding attaches to the edge of each stair. It serves both an aesthetic and safety purpose, providing slip and trip protection. They also reduce the wear and tear of the stair itself, acting as a defense against constant use.

A Metropolitan Collection Exclusive: Multifunctional Molding

We're excited to introduce a convenient solution, offered on our Metropolitan Collection: multifunctional molding.

Included in the multifunctional molding is a reducer, a transition, and an end cap. While individual molding is available for purchase for the Metropolitan Collection, this is a handy option if you're looking for a 3 in 1 solution.

Still curious what sort of molding works best for your situation? The Pelican team is here to assist you.
